Race to the Top Commencement Challenge 2011

Hats off and congratulations to the six high school finalists in President Obama’s Race to the Top Commencement Challenge.  The winning school with host the president as its commencement speaker.

Each school has submitted an inspiring video presentation (with help from the Get Schooled Foundation) depicting not only an impressive student body but also caring and supportive teachers and administrators all of whom are committed to preparing the students for a future while having fun leaning and achieving goals.

Makes one (almost!) want to go back to high school again.

You can vote on the presentations through April 29th.  Even if you don’t want to vote, take a few moments to view one of the videos.  The creativity and positive attitudes shown in the videos will brighten your day.  Although only one school will be chosen to host President Obama, all of the participants can consider themselves winners.

Summer Internships, Summer Jobs for High School and College

Summer Internships - Learn, Earn and Have Fun

An internship is a great way to learn about a profession or company while getting paid and having fun.  Traditionally internships are for college students, but with a little research, high school students can also take advantage of these opportunities.

Internships can be great ways to gain mentors, both job and college references and great entries on college applications and resumes.

Here are some links and suggestions to get you started.

  • College Internships: Monster.com
  • HIgh School Internships: HighSchoolInternships.com
  • Pick a company that you like and contact their HR department or search for ‘XXXX’ internships (i.e. Google internships).
  • Pick an industry that you like and contact the industry’s association (i.e.architects, search for association of architects, top search return will be American Institute off Architects).
  • Contact your local city government or local council person.
  • Contact a non-profit that you like.
  • Ask your parent (or other relatives) to check with the HR department of their employer.

As I researched this article I came across the following references on the web site of Santa Clara County Supervisor Dave Cortese.

  • ABAG (Association of Bay Area Governments) has an opportunity for a summer internship.
  • NetApp has numerous opportunities for summer internships.
  • My office has opportunities for summer and school year internships for students, as well. For more information, please contact Michelle Osorio by phone 408-299-5030.

Queen of the Festival Scholarship Program

The Queen of the Festival scholarship program announces its fifth year of supporting young women in furthering their higher education. Five high school seniors will compete for the Queen title and a $6,000 scholarship. The total amount of scholarships awarded is $15,000.

The Queen of the Festival scholarship program promotes community service and it is open to high school seniors who will be attending university. This scholarship program is part of the Sheriff’s Youth Program Fund and held in conjunction with the 10th Annual North Fair Oaks Community Festival on August 21, 2011. The festival is a multicultural event sponsored by San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Greg Munks. He welcomes the community to enjoy a day of free live entertainment, arts and crafts, food and beverages, children’s rides and activities, and a festive parade.

“We are proud to sponsor university scholarships for young women in our community. The Queen of the Festival scholarship program inspires young people of all ages to aspire to higher education and provides positive role models. It is a tremendous effort by the entire community,” said Sheriff Greg Munks.

The top scholarship award is $6,000 for the queen; two princesses will receive $3,500 each; and two finalists will receive $1,500 scholarships each. Applicants must be university-bound females with excellent academic, community service credentials and must submit a community involvement essay. Applicants are evaluated and five outstanding finalists are selected by a committee compromised of community leaders, including co-chairs Beto Chavez and Lilia Ledezma. The application deadline is March 30, 2011 at 5 p.m.
