Peanut Corp of America Peanut Product Recall Expands to over 200 Products

Updated January 30, 2009

On Janurary 29th PCA expanded its recall to include all peanut products processed at it Blakely plant from Jaunary 1, 2007 onward.  The expanded recall now includes: all peanuts (dry and oil roasted), granulated peanuts, peanut meal, peanut butter and peanut paste.

Why is this recall important to you? Please read this excert from the FDA website: FDA has determined that PCA distributed potentially contaminated product to more than 100 consignee firms, for use as an ingredient in hundreds of different products, such as cookies, crackers, cereal, candy and ice cream.

Why Should You Check the Database Product Listing?  As the products included in the recall expands so does the number of comsumer products and the expiration date.  For example: Bear Naked announced the recall of its Appalachian Trail Mixes. The trail mixes that are being recalled have a  “Better if Used Before” date prior to February 01, 2010.

During this past week, recalls notices have been sent by companies such as Trader Joe’s, Jenny Craig, Ochard Valley, NutriSystem, Harry and David, Cliff Bar and Bear Naked. It is also important to check the database of products because while you may not recognize the name of a company which produces a product, you will recognize the name on the product produced.  For example: Ice Cream Specialties is a company which makes ice cream novelty products for other companies such Nestle, which now has two products listed in the database (Optifast Honey Nut ‘n Oat and Crocanti Crunch Bars).

Original Post

PCA is recalling peanut butter and peanut paste used by institutions such as schools and retirement communities, and in the manufacture of consumer products by the likes of Keebler and NutriSystem.  So far, the products included range from Cliff bars to pet food with stores from Wal-Mart to Trader Joes.

Because of the surprising variety of products (and companies) included in the recall, take a moment to view the products listed.  This list has been revised several times since the recall began.

It is important to note that recall information found on the web which references Peter Pan and Great Value brand peanut butter was for a salmonella outbreak in 2006.  Those products have not been recalled (at this time) in connection with the PCA recall announced earlier this month.

All recalls have been voluntary.

Museums on Us sponsored by Bank of America

Museums on Us occurs the first full weekend of each month and is sponsored by Bank of America.

At that time select museums will offer free admission (on both Saturday and Sunday) to card holders of BofA credit cards, debit cards and ATM cards.

The only catch is that free admittance is ONLY for the card holders, not guests. If you have a BofA card and your children do not, you will have to pay the admission price for them.

The solution for this problem is to request a debit, credit or ATM card for anyone in your family that does not have one.  I suggest that when you get the cards that you do not activate them, simply tuck the cards in your wallet or purse.  I have one wallet which is only used for membership cards.

The weekends for the 2008 year are:

Sept. 6 & 7

Oct. 4 & 5

Nov. 1 & 2

Dec. 6 & 7

This is a nationwide promotion.  Forward this information to your friends and family that they can get free admission too!

California Great America Halloween Haunt 2008

Updated 10/3/8 Note: California Great America has added discount pricing for regular season pass holders ($19.99 for the first two weekends and $24.99 for the remainder of the Haunt).  I have updated Scenario #3 to reflect the discounted price.

If you are planning to visit the Halloween Haunt at Great America (or have teens who might), these tips should be helpful in determining how to spend the least amount of money to enjoy your visit.

What is Halloween Haunt and how much does it cost? Halloween Haunt is a nightly attraction at Great America.  The Haunt is scheduled for 7 pm - midnight each Friday, Saturday and Sunday from October 3rd - November 1st.  Tickets are $39.99 at the door, $34.99 pre-sale online, $19.99-$24.99 for regular season pass holders. Parking is $10.

Scenario #1: You have no season pass and will only be going to Halloween Haunt once. Buy your ticket online. Combined, the cost of the ticket and parking are $44.99.

Scenario #2: You have no season pass and will only be going to Halloween Haunt more than once. Buy a Gold pass for 2008. Passes are $95.  This will give you free parking and free admission to Halloween Haunt. Combined the cost for two tickets online and parking are $80. With the Gold pass you get free admission to Halloween Haunt, parking, 20% discount at several places in the park and free admission to Great America itself.

Scenario #3: You have regular season pass and you are going once. Go during the first two weekends Oct 3,4,5 or Oct 10,11 and 12th. Your discounted price will be $19.99.  After 10/12 the discounted price will be $24.99.

Scenario #3a: You have regular season pass and you are going more than once. Upgrade to a Gold pass for 2008. The upgrade price will be the difference between the cost of your 2008 season pass and the cost of a gold pass (which is $95). If you are going more than once then you will pay at least $39.98 for two admissions. Upgrading to a Gold pass will give you free admission to Halloween Haunt for the season. Parking is free for season pass holders.

Scenario #4: You have a Gold or Plantinum season pass. Enjoy!  Your admission is free. Parking is free for season pass holders.

The First Tee and Youth on Course Golf Programs

Registration for the next session of The First Tee of San Jose is this Saturday, Sept 6th at 8:30 am.  The First Tee is a great program teaching children how to play golf and using golf as a springboard to teaching them life skills and values.

The group in San Jose is not the only group in the area.  Here is a link to look for programs in your area:  Northern California Golf Association Youth on Course program.

Whether or not you are a golfer, you will appreciate the discounts and benefits offered through the NCGA Foundation’s Youth on Course (YOC).  Particpants have the opportunity to play some of the area’s best courses for $5 or less while using the life skills and values training they learned in their Youth on Course certified program.

Summer Reading Programs: Library, Barnes & Noble and Pizza Hut

Summer is here and so is one of my favorite summer activities, the Summer Reading Program at my local libraries.  Like the rest of us, summer reading programs have grown to include not only young children, but teenagers and adults.  If you haven’t done so yet, stop by your local library (or libraries if like us you have both San Jose Public and Santa Clara County libraries nearby) and get started.

Don’t forget audio books.  Especially during your summer travels.  Books on CD and audio tape can be found at your local libary in addition to Overdrive which is an e-book and audio book repository used by libraries throughout the county.  Your local library card is all you need to check out this great free service.  Audio books are anywhere from 30 minutes for young readers to twenty one hours for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Besides Overdrive, I recommend Amazon.com, Simply Audiobooks, and iTunes.

Libraries are not the only organizations promoting summer reading.  Books can be earned at Barnes & Noble and Pizza Hut is sponsoring Brain Food Summer Reading Fun.  Winning entries will receive Pizza Hut gift cards, books and the grand prize winner will receive an Nintendo DS Lite with Big Brain Academy game.

Remember the goal is to have your child read at least 5 books during the summer.
